Question by : How does one publish a book in the US that was already published in Europe?
A friend of mine recently self-published a book here in Europe about a year ago. He went the traditional self-publishing route, not print-on-demand, so he set up his own “publishing house” and had a certain number of copies made and keeps the bulk of the book in his home I believe, and sells them at talks and events, etc. He would like to publish the book in the states, and I am helping him with the English translations, but we’re not sure how he should approach the US market with the book. Does he need to approach the situation as a writer, and seek an agent and literary attorney, etc., even though he is publisher as well? All the rights belong to him, but I was also curious about whether or not he would need to worry about copyrighting and foreign rights affairs when it comes to having the book published in the US and hopefully other countries around the world. The book is in the self-development/new business model genre, so there’s a great market for it.
